The Musings of an MA Mamma

About me

Su SGS

My name is Su Roys and I am currently a Masters student reading Community Radio at the University of Lincoln, and volunteer Work Experience Coordinator at Siren FM, the East Midlands Community Radio station of the year 2014.

I’ve lead an eclectic life so far; after graduating from Lancaster University with a BA (Hons) English Language, Linguistics and Educational Studies, and having trekked to Mount Everest Basecamp for charity in 2000, I started my working life as a hotel receptionist before moving on to be a Unit Controller with Luminar Leisure at Liquid Nightclub in Lancaster – a job I enjoyed greatly for 4 years before returning back to my roots.

As a Lincolnshire yellowbelly born and bred, I returned home and started a new job as a School Librarian and Work Experience/Careers Library Coordinator at Skegness Grammar School, before meeting my now husband and moving to our lovely house just over the county border in Nottinghamshire where we keep chickens, sheep and grown our own fruit and vegetables. It’s a real life “Good Life”.

Having run our 5 acre smallholding and a jam and chutney business last year, I decided it was time for a change now that our children were both old enough to be occupied in education. So I stepped down from being a Local Authority Governor at the local primary school and as a member of the local Surestart Advisory Board, and embarked on the next chapter of my hectic, challenging – but always fun – adventure in life. An MA.

When I get free time, I love music, drama and literature of any sort. Our home is always full of sound, be that music, radio or laughter! My music tastes range from Elgar, Vaughan Williams and Karl Jenkins, through to Billie Holiday, Def Leppard, Faithless, Fatboy Slim and Gary Barlow – I listen to pretty much anything, but as a pianist in my teenage years, it usually has a piano slant to it and I have a particular love of 80’s/90’s music.

Most of all, I adore live music/performance. Any chance I get, I’m at a concert or show and can’t wait till our youngest child is old enough to come with me to the music concerts so she too can experience the magic that is live performance. I am also a keen singer and am currently a member of Siren Voices, a community singing group in Lincoln.
